The RD Lawrence Place

Discover 82 years of this award-winning author's adventures in the Canadian wilderness.
Ronald Douglas Lawrence captivated readers internationally with 30 published books about Canadian wildlife and the environment. The RD Lawrence Place is a museum and literary centre with a mandate to foster a love of reading, promote the art of writing and deepen respect for our natural heritage. Various events are held throughout the year details of which can be found here.

Following Ron Lawrence's death in 2003, his wife Sharon Lawrence donated his literary collection to the Minden Hills Cultural Centre. The RD Lawrence Place celebrates the Canadian non-fiction writer whose passion for natural history and the environment had a profound impact on educating people around the world.

Visitors to the centre can watch documentaries about his life at Wolf Hollow - the Lawrence's private wildlife sanctuary in Haliburton County. These documentaries chronicle Lawrence's transition from Spanish youth to war veteran, his experiences as a journalist, Canadian homesteader, inveterate wanderer and field biologist. There are many original exhibits on display (see pictures in the panel on the right), the exhibits are regularly changed.

His life story is showcased in a building constructed of straw bales, includes solar water heating, indoor waste water treatment and over a dozen green construction techniques and features. The building was constructed by the Fleming College Sustainable Building Programme.
