26-Mar-2011 - Finding the Line Book Launch | | Brenda Peddigrew will launch her first book of essays at the Minden Cultural Centre. Finding the Line: ordinary encounters in nature’s mirror contains Brenda’s essays originally written for The Highlands Communicator, Sideroads of Haliburton, and her Christmas essays which appeared in The Haliburton Echo, as well as previously unpublished essays. This book is a work that celebrates everyday encounters with the animals, rivers, forests and trails of Haliburton County. It is specific in names, places, and sometimes history, and delights the reader in the great light that lives in the ordinary of everyday life here. Come to the launch and hear Brenda read from this significant collection as well as live music. There will be refreshments. Admission is by donation. |

Poetry Month is again being celebrated by HHWEN as the annual poetry contest returns. Send in your poem for a shot at prizes! There are two categories adult and youth (14yrs and under). The judges are Alex Hamilton Brown and WIR Ron Evans. Entries are to be emailed to hhwenpoem2011 at gmail.com. Admission by donation to the celebration on April 16 where winners will be announced and their poems read.

13-Apr-2011 - To Kill A Mockingbird - Novel to Screen Public | To Kill A Mockingbird is often cited as one of the best screen adaptations of a novel ever made so we will kick off the new Novel to Screen Club with this classic starring Gregory Peck. (an earlier March date was snowed out.)

29-Apr-2011 - Sanctuary - new exhibition at R.D. Lawrence Place | Sanctuary as a theme in R.D. Lawrence’s life is explored in this exhibition from his war years to founding wildlife sanctuaries in Ontario and how his writing still makes a case today for more wildlife sanctuaries.

Canadian author of short-story collection the Dream King and novel Hotel Paradiso brings his latest novel, set in the northern lakes of Ontario, to Minden Hills. Robinson has been nominated several times for literary prizes such as the Edgar Allen Poe Award. Providence Island is about a man returning to cottage country to bury his father, who is taken back to a tangled romance and the lonesome swamps that haunt his dreams in this suspenseful tale. Cottage Life Magazine called the book 'gripping'.
